With support from Gates Foundation and private humanitarian funds, Corus organization IMA World Health is meeting the urgent needs of trauma victims and vulnerable community members in partnership with HEAL Africa Hospital, Panzi Foundation, and 12 local health facilities in North and South Kivu Provinces of DRC significantly impacted by armed conflict.
Addressing the overwhelmed health care system
IMA World Health launched the response in early 2025 as violence in the region and conflict-related injuries overwhelmed hospitals and clinics and led to the displacement of more than 450,000 people in Goma. Tens of thousands of families have sought safety in collective centers, schools and health facilities.
In response to an urgent appeal from HEAL Africa in Goma, IMA World Health provided essential medicine, fuel, and supplies, as hospital staff provided critical surgical and trauma care for more than 900 patients at their 300-bed capacity facility.
Expanding public health capacity amid rising risks
To ensure the health system can meet expanding humanitarian needs and to address growing public health concerns, IMA World Health is facilitating training for several hundred community and facility health workers on the prevention and treatment of waterborne diseases, such as cholera. The project is also providing water purification tablets to families living in crowded spaces without adequate sanitation. IMA World Health has collaborated with head nurses at health facilities to identify up to 10 new latrine sites to address these health risks.
In response to the recent devastating surge of sexual violence against women and children in the region, IMA World Health, in partnership with its health facility partners, has scaled up training of health workers in active case surveillance, treatment, and referrals for comprehensive clinical management of rape and psychosocial counselling. The project also facilitated distribution and training on the use of 1,192 Post-Exposure-Prophylaxis (PEP) Kits for rape survivors.
A legacy of compassion and commitment
Since 2000, IMA World Health has been steadfast in its mission to serve the people of the DRC, working alongside local and national partners to address vital health needs and respond to crises. With over two decades of unwavering support, the organization has strengthened health systems, provided lifesaving services, and bolstered community resilience in some of the most fragile regions. As it looks to the future, IMA World Health remains deeply committed to continuing its essential work in eastern DRC, ensuring access to health care, hope, and dignity for those who need it most.
